Bat Appreciation Month

Bat Puppet Craft

By Angela Duncan October 19, 2017
As a home-school mom, I am always searching for fun crafts for the kids each day. So when I found out that October is Bat Appreciation Month, I took the opportunity to teach the boys about the mosquito feasting creatures. Did you know that bats are the only flying mammals? They actually have fur and they nurse their babies with milk. Bats are warm blooded and they do most of their hunting at night. Bats use echolocation to tell them where an object is by using high-pitched squeaks. Bats have been depicted as scary, blood sucking monsters, but that is far from the truth. Don't believe me? Google "bats" and you will find out that farmers love them and they are a misunderstood species that we need to protect.

Anyways...

The nights are drawing in and Halloween is around the corner... this is a super easy craft and can be used as a decoration or as a puppet.

         Materials
  • Paper bag
  • Black paint (if not using a black paper bag)
  • White paper
  • Black paper
  • Googly eyes
  • Glue
  • Scissors

Flip the bag to the side with the flap. This will be the bat head.

If your paper bag is not black, paint it and let dry.

Cut out 2 triangles using the white paper and glue on the flap of the bag for teeth.

Cut out 2 triangles using the black paper and glue on top of the head for bat ears.

Glue on 2 googly eyes.

Cut out 2 wing shapes and glue onto the back of the bag for bat wings.

(You can also Google a paper bag bat craft template to make it even simpler).

The kids can enjoy playing with and flying around their bat puppet.

What's the first thing bats learn at school?

The alpha-bat.

Have a batsolutely perfect day!
